The State of Generic Job Boards: 2 Issues to Evaluate

Over the past year, we have been inundated with every version of internet recruiting possibility.  Generic job boards pop up weekly.  So here are our thoughts on the current state of generic job boards.

What do they really do?

At Phoenix Group International, we research and test every type of “new age” recruitment and sourcing tool that is sent to us so we stay current on industry trends and new uses of technology.  This is to keep abreast of the state of recruiting currently, and to see if any of these sources are viable for this industry so we can more effectively recruit new candidates and find the right fit for our clients.

While at first glance these sources appear to provide alternative methods of recruiting for very low cost, we firmly believe the following:

  1. They Just Don't Apply to Private Equity & Venture Capital:

    Very few of these sources – if any – actually fit our industry.  In fact, if you try to choose from their menus for industry and job categories – they don’t even have our categories to choose from making it nearly impossible to find the right candidate for your firm.  If you do put in keywords for our industry – you consistently come up with "0 matches".  So while there are many recruiting sources out there, they work for the more generic jobs categories outside private equity and venture capital.
     
  2. Internal Resources Are Required:

    The time it takes to work and update these sources requires a battalion of staff to effectively manage this process.  And then one needs to question, does the time and personnel involved justify the time and effort to identify candidates.  It all sounds very good on paper, but how practical, in terms of resources, are these job boards?

We work in a niche industry with very specialized talent.  There is still a specific need for traditional recruitment.   We must also recognize that in private equity and venture capital firms, we are looking for the best candidate, and not just candidates looking for positions.
